TIPS ON WRITING AN ARTIST OR BAND BIO

A Biography or Bio, is a written account of the series of events that make up an artist or bands’ life. A bio should not be a timeline from when you were two years old and sang special music in church. A bio should be 3-4 paragraphs and should clearly state interesting facts about the artist or band.

Opening Paragraph:
An introduction sentence that represents the band or artist. The band name should be mentioned, genre or style of music, where you hail from and maybe a quote from some prominent person in the music industry.
You should try and incorporate some of your musical influences into your bio. Most people will try and do the, They sound like……? Believe me, even though you think you are the most unique band around you still sound like someone. So instead of being compared to a band that you can't stand – go ahead and make some associations.

Second Paragraph
At this point in the bio you should state what your purpose is or what you are doing now as a group.
• New CD coming out soon
• Going on a tour
• Just coming off a tour
• Going into the studio to record
• Mission trips

Third Paragraph
If you are a soloist you can write a brief paragraph about your musical past, experiences, other bands you’ve been with, awards, songwriting competitions etc.

A band can focus on some of the same or you can also focus on some of the individual members and highlight some cool or fun facts.

Ending
End the bio with a call to action or a quote. A call to action might be that you are filling your fall calendar and you are looking for gigs. If your bio is being used for record industry interest your call to action might express that you are looking for a record label, radio play, distribution, opening slots on larger tours etc.

Notes
• Have someone proof read the bio and check it for grammar, spelling, punctuation. There is nothing worse than a poorly written bio.
• A full detailed bio can be used on your website or MySpace but written bios are best kept to one page.
